Some answers about osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a treatment that emerged in the USA, created by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917), who presented the principles of this natural therapy.

It is an evaluation and treatment system, with its own methodology and philosophy, which aims to restore the function of body structures and systems, acting through manual intervention on tissues (joints, muscles, fascia, ligaments, capsules, viscera, nervous tissue, vascular and lymphatic).

The validity of osteopathy is so concrete that it is recommended and encouraged by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a health practice. According to Andrew Still, the human body is a system capable of self-regeneration, and it is the osteopath's duty to eliminate the factors that prevent it from functioning in a healthy way.

Thus, scientifically, osteopathy is based on anatomy and simultaneously uses a holistic vision that integrates the mind and the body, which ultimately heals itself as long as its internal mechanics are healthy.

What happens at an Osteopathy consultation?

At the first consultation, a complete anamnesis is taken: what brought you there, the antecedents and clinical history.

If you have additional exams, you must bring them too.

The space between appointments is eight to ten days to give the body the chance to regenerate – this is one of the principles of osteopathy.

Depending on the type of osteopathy practiced, the patient lies down dressed or in underwear.

To discover mobility blocks, tensions and imbalances in the patient's body, the osteopath uses his hands, following precise manipulation techniques.

But, contrary to a common myth, you don’t have to ‘click anything to go to the place’.

In osteopathy, the clicking of the joint does not mean that the bone has returned to its place.

The bone does not move back and forth; these are small slips.

Are there any contraindications to undergoing Osteopathy treatment?

Not in the hands of a good therapist.

People who have had a stroke cannot undergo cranial sacral osteopathy, but other aspects can be performed.

Structural osteopathy cannot be used on a person with osteoporosis, but sacro-cranial or visceral techniques can be applied.

You should not apply cranial-sacral osteopathy to anyone suffering from epilepsy, but you can apply more musculoskeletal techniques.

Osteopathy does not treat more complicated diseases, such as ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis or rheumatic diseases, but gives the patient a better quality of life through pain relief.

Is there more than one type of Osteopathy?

There are several techniques, linked to the different systems of the body.

What health problems can Osteopathy help with?

What first comes to mind are health problems related to bones, joints and muscles, such as back pain or sprains.

But the area of action of osteopathy extends to other health problems.

Some of the most common ones that appear to us are low back pain, sciatica, neck, shoulder and arm pain.

Cranial-sacral osteopathy helps balance the nervous system, with problems such as anxiety or sleep disorders.

Visceral helps improve gastric problems, such as hiatus hernias, gastroesophageal reflux and others.

Monitoring pregnant women, pre- and postpartum, also has very interesting results.

During pregnancy, osteopathy helps to alleviate minor ailments, such as sciatica, heavy legs or temporomandibular joint pain.

It will act to release the muscles of the pelvic floor and reinforce the muscle tone of the perineum, to facilitate expulsion during childbirth, and, in addition, it mobilizes the bones of the pelvis, so that opening is easier.

If the pelvis becomes blocked during childbirth, the woman may experience postpartum depression because the sacrum becomes blocked.

Therefore, the release of feel-good neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, will also be reduced.

It is even important so that women can resume their normal sex life more quickly.
